Kemptown and the Undercliff Walk, with Kemp

Kemp, the Capenza crew member, with his backpack over a map of Kemptown in Brighton

The crew, 05 of 07.

Beard, beanie, backpack. Kemp packs light, walks everywhere and has usually left Kemptown on the next adventure before you've had breakfast. Here's where he goes.

Who is Kemp?

Kemp lives at the top of a Kemptown street steep enough to count as training. He walks everywhere: along the undercliff, over the Downs and on to wherever the next train goes.

His backpack is always half packed. He'll be up before the bakeries open, out along the cliffs to Rottingdean and back in time for lunch on St George's Road.

He owns very little, and every piece of it has done thousands of miles.

Kemptown, his way

Kemptown is the east side of Brighton, past the Palace Pier: colourful terraces, steep streets running down to the sea and a village feel around St George's Road. It's also where some of the best walks out of the city begin.

The steep streets

Kemp lives at the top of one. Walk it twice a day and you won't need a gym.

St George's Road

Kemptown's little high street: cafés, bakeries and independent shops. Kemp's lunch stop on the way back from a walk.

Sussex Square and Lewes Crescent

Grand Regency squares and crescents at the eastern end, built on a huge scale and facing the sea.

The Undercliff Walk

From the Marina, a flat path runs below the chalk cliffs to Rottingdean. Kemp is out along it before the bakeries open and back in time for lunch.

The South Downs

Rolling hills just behind the city. For the days when the cliffs aren't far enough.

What Kemp wears

A walnut beanie, a grey heavyweight hoodie that's done more miles than most people, and a black tote for the shopping on the way home.

See Kemp's crew page: the full drawing, front and back, and a map of where to find them.
