Brighton's real locals: the seagulls, with Gulliver

Gulliver, the Capenza crew seagull, flying over a map of Brighton beach between the piers

The crew, 07 of 07.

Every crew has one member who was there first. Ours is Gulliver, who has lived on Brighton beach longer than any of us and has had your chips more than once. Here's the seafront, his way.

Who is Gulliver?

Gulliver was here first and he'll be here long after the rest of us. He lives on the beach between the piers and considers every bag of chips on it partly his.

He knows exactly when the tourists arrive, which bins are worth checking and which roof is warmest in the afternoon. Nobody has ever got a chip past him twice.

He wears his cap backwards, mostly to annoy us.

  • Lives in: Brighton beach
  • Find them: On the beach between the piers, near your chips
  • Never without: His eye on your chips

The beach, his way

Brighton's beach is pebbles, not sand, and it runs the whole length of the city. Between the two piers is the busiest part, and that's exactly why Gulliver lives there.

Between the piers

Where the crowds are, the chips are. Gulliver's patch, and he patrols it daily.

The rooftops

Brighton's gulls nest on rooftops all over the city. Gulliver knows which one is warmest in the afternoon.

The groynes

The wooden and stone barriers that run down the beach into the sea. Good for sitting on, if you're a gull.

The Palace Pier

Plenty of people, plenty of dropped doughnuts. Gulliver's second home.

How to keep your chips

  • Eat with your back to a wall, so nothing swoops in from behind.
  • Keep the box close and covered when you're not eating.
  • Please don't feed them. It only teaches them to come back for more.
  • Watch the sky. If you see a gull circling, you're already being watched.

What Gulliver wears

Our custom cap in stone (he'd have CHIPS stitched on the front), a navy beanie for winter and a tote, for carrying the chips home.

See Gulliver's crew page: the full drawing, front and back, and a map of where to find them.

Questions

Is Brighton beach sandy?

No, it's pebbles all the way along. Bring something to sit on.

Why are there so many seagulls in Brighton?

Gulls have always lived on this coast, nesting on rooftops and feeding along the beach, where there's plenty for them to find.

How do I stop seagulls taking my food?

Eat with your back to a wall, keep your food covered and never feed them.
