The seafront ride to the Palace Pier, with Pierre

Pierre, the Capenza crew member, on his bike over a map of Brighton seafront and the Palace Pier

The crew, 06 of 07.

Tattoos, moustache, absolutely no rush. Pierre has done the same ride along the seafront every morning for as long as anyone can remember. Here's his route, from one end of the morning to the other.

Who is Pierre?

Pierre has done the same ride every morning for as long as anyone can remember: along the seafront cycle lane to Brighton Palace Pier, a lap of the end of it, then back again.

He knows the fishermen by name and the gulls by sight. The tattoos each have a story, though he only tells one a year.

Nothing about Pierre is in a hurry, least of all his bike.

The seafront, his way

Brighton's seafront runs for miles, with a cycle lane along much of the promenade. Pierre rides it every morning to Brighton Palace Pier and back, at exactly the same pace every time.

The seafront cycle lane

Flat, sea on one side, city on the other. Early mornings it's nearly empty.

Brighton Palace Pier

The Victorian pier that's still standing tall, with its rides and arcades at the end. Pierre does one lap of it, says hello to whoever's fishing and heads back.

The fishing quarter

Between the piers, under the arches, you'll find Brighton's fishing history: old boats on the beach and the little fishing museum. Pierre knows the fishermen by name.

The arches

Under the promenade, the old arches are full of cafés, bars and small shops. Good for a coffee stop on the way home.

What Pierre wears

A denim washed cap, a black heavyweight tee and a natural stone tote on the handlebars for his morning paper.

See Pierre's crew page: the full drawing, front and back, and a map of where to find them.
