Our Essential Cap comes in 19 washed colours, which is great until you have to pick one. Here's how we'd choose, starting with the colours that go with everything.
The colours that go with everything
If you only own one cap, make it a neutral. These work with denim, black, grey, navy and almost anything in between:
- Vintage Black: the safest choice. Washed black has a soft, faded look, so it's less harsh than a deep black.
- Vintage Grey: easy with everything, especially grey marl and black.
- Vintage Stone: a warm off-white that looks great with denim and summer clothes.
- Vintage Sand: a little warmer than stone, lovely with browns, greens and cream.
Colours that still go with most things
Want something with more character that still works every day? Try Vintage Olive, Vintage Brown, Vintage Denim or Vintage Light Denim. Earthy tones and faded blues sit happily with neutral clothes and pick up the colours in a jacket or jeans.
Colours that add a lift
If your wardrobe is mostly black, grey and navy, a coloured cap is the easiest way to brighten it. Try Vintage Sage Green, Vintage Mustard, Cornflower or Light Blue for something fresh, or Vintage Dusky Pink and Vintage Peach for something softer.
Colours that make a statement
Orange, Vintage Red, True Pink, Vintage Bottle Green and Vintage Camo are for days when the cap is the outfit. Keep the rest simple and let the colour do the talking.
Three quick rules
- Match something else you're wearing. A sand cap with tan shoes, or a sage cap with a green jacket, looks deliberate.
- Go lighter in summer, darker in winter. Stone and sand for the beach; black, olive and brown with heavier coats.
- When in doubt, go washed. Faded colours are more forgiving than bright, flat ones and look good with more things.
And for winter
Our Essential Beanie comes in 12 colours, from Black, Graphite Grey and Oatmeal to Walnut, Burgundy and Luminous Blue. The same rules apply: neutrals for every day, colour for a lift.

Questions
What's the most versatile cap colour?
Black, grey and stone are the easiest. Washed versions of each are softer than bright ones, so they go with even more.
Does a navy outfit go with a black cap?
It can, but a grey, stone or denim cap usually looks better with navy than black does.
Will a washed cap fade more?
Washed caps are dyed and washed to look softly faded from day one. Hand wash them cold and they'll keep their colour.
